Why are we doing this instead of applying to the job?
There's 2 reasons:
- Everyone applies to the job. Do you want to do what everyone else does? Remember, only 1 person gets the job. So the person who does their best to stand out increases their chance of getting the job. Directly emailing the hiring manager is standing out.
- Once you become an SDR, you'll spend ~50% of the time cold emailing prospects. What better way to show the hiring manager that you can do the job than cold emailing them?
The step-by-step process to craft the perfect cold email
Paragraph 1
- Find the hiring manager on LinkedIn. Their title should include "Sales Development" in it.
- Read through their LinkedIn and Google them to find something you can relate to, that you can mention in the email. This shows you put in the work of doing the research to send a good cold email.
Paragraph 2
- Tell them why you want to interview or meet with them. What are you hoping to chat about with them? All the better if you can mention something you found during your research.
Paragraph 3
- This is your call to action. What do you want from them? You want a call (which is basically your first-round interview with the company).
Subsequent emails
- In sales, you need persistence. That means you're not always going to get the "yes" the first time you ask. So keep asking!
- Send 2 follow up emails.
- The first follow up can reference your initial email in case they missed it.
- The second follow up (& last email) can mention how you've been trying to get in contact with them, and how eager you are to interview there. If you really want the job, reference a customer case study you read about on their website. This is another way of showing you know how to do the SDR job.
